Was in a conversation earlier this week as a friend shared about a student taking their own life. As she unpacked what she was feeling, I was able to share about my own experience. When my sister passed on June 20, 2008, I walked in a culture of fear. Fear of judgement. Fear of shame. Darkness can be a real beast. I was afraid to be weak for my family, and as it happened, put too much on my shoulders. I was afraid to be honest with my friends, and as it happened, missed an opportunity for comfort. I was afraid to release what had happened, for fear of judgement and of shame. The enemy smirked as he does when fear takes over. Let us be challenged to welcome a culture of vulnerability. Let us welcome a culture of honesty, and with that, speak truth and life over the ones we love, and even those we don’t know. For our words are so powerful that they will kill or they will give life. Join us in stepping out today to speak life over somebody, for you may not know what battle they’re in.
